Thirty years after CASIO first paired a G-SHOCK and a BABY-G in one box and called it love, VERDY is taking a turn. The Osaka-born artist's Girls Don't Cry label has made the newest G PRESENTS LOVER'S COLLECTION set, a two-watch pack with the model number LOV-26A-1JR. It marks the collection's 30th anniversary, and it might be the most sincere thing ever sold with a resin strap.
The bigger watch is a DW-5600, the square G-SHOCK everyone pictures when you say "G-SHOCK." It gets a Girls Don't Cry logo face, a glossy black band covered in logo print, a devil engraved on the caseback, a heart cut out of the band keeper, and a pink butterfly when the backlight comes on. The smaller watch is a BABY-G BGD-565 with a black face, a white matte logo pattern, an angel on the caseback and a green butterfly backlight. So one of you is the devil and one of you is the angel. Deciding who gets which is on you, and we take no responsibility for what that conversation does to your relationship.
The angel-and-devil pairing isn't new. It goes back to the original LOVER'S COLLECTION watch in 1996, and VERDY is clearly a fan. He has said he still wears the first BABY-G he ever gave his wife, which explains why this pack reads like a love letter and not a logo stamp. The packaging gets the same attention. Each watch comes in its own limited pouch, the two pouches snap together, and each has a gold heart charm on the zipper. It's corny, and that's exactly why it works.
Our take: VERDY's graphics can show up on just about anything, but they make sense on a watch made to be split between two people. The DW-5600 and BGD-565 are a sensible pair of cases, and the details stay small enough that you could wear either one on a normal Tuesday. ¥38,500 for two watches also looks reasonable for a collab, as long as you can get one.
