New Balance's factory in Flimby, England is closing out 2026 with about the most British thing a sneaker can be. A first look from Sneaker News shows the original New Balance 991 Made in England wrapped in wooly brown houndstooth, the fabric you usually find on your grandad's best blazer.
The houndstooth sits on the base layer and peeks out through the toe, the side panels and the collar. Black leather handles all the overlays, including the tonal N logo, and a slightly lighter grey midsole keeps it from turning into one big dark blob. Tan lining inside the collar warms the whole thing up.
This isn't the 991's first time in the pattern. Back in 2021, New Balance released a houndstooth pack with the 991 and 1500 using Harris Tweed fabric from Scotland, and Sneaker News expects this one to use the same source, though that hasn't been confirmed.
Our take: this is a shoe for people who say "lovely" when the weather turns cold. Black leather plus tweed is one of those pairings that looks rich without trying, and it'll look right with wide trousers, a chore coat or just a hoodie when you want to act fancy. If Made in England is your lane, this one should be on your list.
There's no release date or price yet, so treat this as a first look with the date TBA. Sneaker News expects a Fall/Winter 2026 drop through New Balance and select retailers, with a price likely somewhere around $260 to $300. We'll update this post when New Balance confirms the details.
