Nike Giannis Freak 8 "Wolf Grey/Hyper Grape" Plays Like a Super Nintendo Controller

Somebody at Nike Basketball clearly still has a Super Nintendo in the basement. The next Nike Giannis Freak 8 colorway, "Wolf Grey/Hyper Grape" (IQ7703-001), is built from the same palette as the 1991 console: two shades of grey on the body, and a run of purples and pink that lines up with the controller's face buttons.

Per Sole Retriever, which posted the first images today, the upper is dark grey mesh wrapping from the side panel across the toe, with a lighter grey on the mesh heel counter and the textured part of the midsole. A deep purple lenticular Swoosh and tongue carry the color up top, and the winged, sculpted midsole fades from pink to purple before running into a translucent light purple outsole. Volt hits on the Giannis logo at the tongue, heel and outsole are the one thing you won't find on the original hardware. Think of it as the cheat code.

Our take: the Freak line has always been at its best when it gets a little weird, and this is the good kind of weird. Gaming-inspired colorways usually lean on pixel graphics and gimmicks. This one just borrows the colors and lets the shoe's shape do the rest. At $115 it's also one of the more reasonable ways to wear a signature shoe on court this winter, and honestly cheaper than a boxed SNES these days.
